Rare, early, pewter medal made to commemorate the English balloonist, James
Sadler's record flight in 1811. The front of this medal bears the image of the English
balloonist, James Sadler and around the edge, the caption, "James Sadler First
English Aeronaut". The reverse shows the car of Sadler's balloon piloted by
himself and his passenger, Mr Burcham. The
inscription reads, "The 21 Ascent - October, 7 1811 - Ascended From Birmingham,
Travers'd Upwards of 112 miles, In 1 Hour & 20 Minutes. The reverse is
also marked with the medallist's initials, "PWF" (P. Wyon, Fecit.) Diameter :
52.5mm. James Sadler was the first native English aeronaut, who made
his maiden flight from Oxford on October 1784. This medal commemorates a flight starting from Vauxhall, near Birmingham on the 7th October 1911. The
balloon covered 112 miles in 1 hour & 20 minutes,
