Rare W.W.I. period RNAS (Royal Navy Air Service) Armoured Car Section sweetheart brooch. Dating from around 1914.
Oval gilt brass badge mounted on a pin. The badge bears the image of a Rolls Royce armoured car below the initials "R.N.A.S.". On the top of the badge is the King's crown. Overall height : 29.5mm. Good condition (slight wear to gilding).
The RNAS Armoured Car Section was formed in the early part of W.W.I. (1914). It consisted of 5 squadrons containing various makes of armoured car, the most popular being based on a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Their purpose was surveillance and aeroplane support (air crew rescue). Shortly after the section evolved into the Royal Navy Armoured Car Division which consisted of 15 squadrons.
