RAF 66 Fighter Squadron

Crest bears the image of a coiled rattle snake and the motto : "Cavete Praemonui" (Beware, I have warned).

This squadron was formed during W.W.I. (1916) and served on the Western and the the North-eastern fronts, first flying Sopwith Pups and then Camels. Between April and July 1918, the squadron was commanded by the famous Canadian ace, Col. W.G. Barker VC. It was disbanded in 1919 and re-formed in 1936, equipped with Gloster Gauntlets. In 1938 these were replaced with Spitfires, which it flew during the Battle of Britain and throughout the rest of W.W.II. The first 'kill' of the Battle of Britain was credited to a pilot of 66 Sqn (Sergeant F N Robertson). The squadron was based in various air fields around the South of England. After the war, the squadron flew Meteor, Sabre & Hunter jets and was finally disbanded in 1966.
