Quality W.W.I. Period Gilt Silver & Enamel RAF "Sweetheart" Wings. c.1918

Beautiful quality, scarce, solid gilded silver sweetheart brooch in the form of a pair of RAF pilot's wings. This brooch almost certainly dates from the very beginning of the RAF (1918) as it still incorporates the Royal Flying Corps pattern wings (which were modelled on those of a Swift) instead of the typical Royal Air Force Eagle's wing pattern. These brooches were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.

Beautifully modelled in gilded silver, this sweetheart is decorated with a green enamel laurel wreath, blue "RAF" initials and a red "King's" crown. The back is stamped, "Silver". Length : 58mm. Very good condition (slight wear to gilding). Comes with a period jeweller's box.
