Very Rare W.W.I. Period German Air Service Signet Ring

Very rare, W.W.I. period German Air Service silver and enamel signet ring.
This large size ring (size "V" - Internal diameter : 21mm) is made from German "800" standard silver. The face of the ring is in the form of a shield which is inlaid with black enamel and decorated with a design consisting of an early biplane and a W.W.I. period "Eisernes Kreuz" (Iron Cross). Either side of the shield, the shank moulded in the form of laurel leaves. The inside of the shank is stamped with the silver mark,"800". Good condition (some surface wear to enamel and shank). Comes with period jeweller's box.
The German Military Aviation service was established in October 1912 and at the start of W.W.I. in 1914 it possessed 246 aircraft which were organized into 41 flight sections with a total of 254 pilots and 271 observers. Throughout the war the service went through major expansion and several reorganizations and at it's end the German Air Service handed over no fewer than 15,000 aircraft to the Allies.
