Scarce British Civil Air Guard Lapel Badge. c.1938

Scarce, British Civil Air Guard lapel badge (pin) dating from around 1938. This badge was issued to members of the C.A.G. who had qualified for their "A" pilot's licence.

Small chrome plated badge in the form of a pair of Civil Air Guard wings decorated with blue enamel. The reverse bears the maker's name, "W. O. Lewis (Badges) Ltd., Birmingham". Width : 41.5mm. Nice condition.

With the threat of war with Germany looming, in 1938 the Civil Air Guard was formed by the Air Minister, Sir Kingsley Wood. It's purpose was to provide cheap flying tuition for both men and women between the ages of 18 and 50. When the inevitable came these persons would be able to offer the Royal Air Force whatever services were required.
