Rare Silver Imperial Airways Cufflinks. c.1939
SOLD

Rare, solid silver and niello Imperial Airways cufflinks manufactured in Thailand (Siam) around 1939.
These attractive cufflinks are made from sterling silver, are hand engraved and inlaid with niello (black silver alloy). One link is engraved with the Imperial Airways "Speedbird" insignia (which was introduced by I.A. in 1938 and later adopted by B.O.A.C.), and the other a pair of Imperial Airways pilot's wings (the I.A. motif clearly visible in their centre). The back's are signed, "Thainakon - Sterling - Thailand" (the use of the name Thailand must date the cufflinks to 1939 - before 1939, Thailand was known as Siam and in later the same year, Imperial Airways ceased to exist when merged with (the pre-war) British Airways to form B.O.A.C.). It is quite likely that these cufflinks were specially made for members of staff flying the I.A. London to Singapore route (one of the stops on the route being Bangkok). The cufflinks are in very good condition and come with a period jewellers cufflink box.
