W.W.I. Period 9ct Gold Royal Flying Corps "Sweetheart" Wings

Good quality, W.W.I. period, solid 9ct gold and enamel "sweetheart" brooch in the form of a pair of Royal Flying Corps pilot's wings. These brooches were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.
This scarce brooch is cast in solid 9ct gold and is decorated with beautiful red and blue enamel. The wings are mounted on to a brooch pin and have a gold safety chain. Attached to the other end of the chain is a gold stick pin inset with an emerald. The back is stamped with the gold mark, "9ct" and with the maker's initials, "T.L.M.". Overall length of wings : 39.5mm. Nice condition. Comes with a good quality period leather jeweller's case.
The Royal Flying Corps was formed on 13th May 1912 and served through the majority of the First World War. On 1st April 1918, the RFC and the RNAS (Royal Navy Air Service) were separated from the army and the navy and merged to form a new service, the Royal Air Force.
