Early advertising medal/token made for the London Ironmonger, Isaac Earlysman Sparrow, depicting Charles Green's balloon . Dating from 1823.
The front of this small, copper medal shows a London ironmonger and is surrounded by his name, "Isaac Earlysman Sparrow". The reverse is decorated with an image of Charles Green's balloon and the caption, "Ironmonger - Bishopsgate, London". This example is one of five known variations of this medal. This particular medal is known to be designed by T. Wyon. Diameter : 23mm. Nice condition (slight wear).
Isaac Earlysman Sparrow was an Ironmonger whose business was based in Bishopsgate, London. He paid the famous balloonist, Charles Green, £50.00 to be taken as a passenger on his well publicized balloon ascent in Oxford on June 23rd 1823. Despite landing in the top of some trees, Sparrow was so impressed that he produced advertising medals/tokens for his business depicting his flight.
