Rare W.W.II. Period Glider Pilot Regiment Sweetheart Brooch

Rare, nice quality, silver and enamel sweetheart brooch in the form of a pair of glider pilot's wings. Brooches such as this were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by servicemen to give to their loved ones.
Nicely modeled British royal (king's) crown surrounded by a lion and a pair of wings, beautifully decorated in red and pale blue enamel. This brooch is a miniature representation of the wings worn by pilots of the British Glider Pilot Regiment during W.W.II. The back is stamped "sterling silver". Overall length : 51mm. Very good condition. Comes with a period, jeweler's box. A very hard to find sweetheart brooch.
The Glider Pilot Regiment was formed during W.W.II. (1941) and was part of the British Airborne forces. They piloted gliders carrying troops and equipment in several in operations during W.W.II. Some of the better know operations were : "Tonga" & "Mallard" (D-Day); "Market" (Airborne part of Operation Market Garden - Arnhem); & "Varsity" (crossing of the Rhine). The regiment was disbanded in 1957.
