With the possibility of war looming, in 1936 The Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve was established. It was to open civilians, who in their spare time would be taught to fly and learn all aspects of airmanship. The recruits would first be trained on elementary aircraft and then would move on to current air force models. They were entered as airmen pilots with the opportunity of promotion to commissioned ranks. They were paid a retaining fee of £25.00 a year and would be transferred straight into regular service if needed.
