Very Rare 1918 Pattern RAF Cap Badge

Very rare, original, 1918 pattern Royal Air Force Warrant Officer-2nd Class and Non Commissioned Officers' cap badge.

This badge has a black felt  background with a gilt  bullion embroidered crown and eagle design. The badge is still attached to it's original (complete) cap band. Badge height : 73mm. Good condition (slight wear to gilding). This badge came from the same source as item number A-226.

These badges were made to be worn on the caps of Warrant Officers-2nd Class and NCO's of the newly formed RAF. The design was based on badge of Chief Petty Officers and lower ranks of the Royal Naval Air Service. It was only officially worn for a very short period (one year), being introduced in May 1918 (shortly after the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to form the Royal Air Force) until May 1919 when it was replaced by the familiar gilt metal cap badge.
