Rare, original, 1918 pattern Royal Air Force eagle arm badge as worn on the short lived khaki RAF 'interim' uniform.

This badge has a khaki cloth background and an embroidered eagle in red silk with black feather detail. The fact that the eagle is facing right indicates that this badge was designed to be worn on the left arm. Length : 87mm. Good condition (some fraying and moth damage to edges).

These badges were made to be worn on both the upper sleeves of the tunic and greatcoats of Warrant Officers-2nd Class, NCO's and lower ranks of the newly formed RAF. The design was based on the navy blue and red badge worn by non-officer ranks of the Royal Naval Air Service. It was introduced in May 1918 (shortly after the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to form the Royal Air Force) and was only officially worn for a short interim period until the standard blue-grey uniform was adopted. From this time the eagle's colour was changed from red to light blue.
