Military aviation began in Canada early on 16th September 1914 with the formation of the Canadian Aviation Corps. This consisted of one mechanic and two officers. This outfit did not see active duty during W.W.I. and was soon disbanded. However many Canadians served with distinction with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. On the 5th August 1918 the British Air Ministry authorized the formation of two Canadian squadrons. The Canadian Air Force was established in 1920 and on 1st April 1924 received it Royal warrant, changing it's name to the Royal Canadian Air Force.
