The Southampton flying boats were first built by the Supermarine Company in 1925. They were powered by two Napier Lion engines and were designed for reconnaissance purposes. Sixty eight in total were made for the Royal Air Force. The Southamptons made a series of important long distance flights in the late 1920's. They flew to Egypt and back in 1926. In 1927 four Southamptons led by Group Captain H. M. Cave-Brown-Cave completed a 23,000 mile formation flight from Plymouth, England to Singapore, around the Australian continent and on to Japan before returning to their base at Singapore. In 1929 the same aircraft flew to Calcutta, India and back to survey part of the proposed Empire air route to Australia.
