Alphonse Pénaud was born in 1850, the son of a French Admiral. A diseased hip prevented his from joining the navy and so he turned his attentions to the field of Aeronautics. He produced several ingenious and important designs including the world's first practical model helicopter and a model aeroplane design which was to become the prototype for all future model aeroplane designs. Sadly in 1880, after a bout of depression he committed suicide. It was one of Pénaud's designs which inspired the Wright Brothers to carry out their experiments.
