Original W.W.II. period, British wooden ID recognition model of a Douglas C47 Dakota transport aircraft.
This large wood and composition, 1/72 scale, hand-made model is decorated with it's original (and unusual) pale green paintwork. The underside still bears the British War Department stores transfer identifying the plane as a C47. Overall wing span : 418mm. Good condition (some light chipping to paint and a minor age crack to composition nose).
These models were produced as training and identification aids for military personnel such as air crew, anti aircraft gunners and members of the Observer Corps.
The Douglas C47 "Dakota" was the British military transport version of the DC3 commercial airliner which was originally built in 1935. The Royal Air Force received it's first (of nearly 2000) Dakota's in April 1941. The RAF flew the aircraft right up until 1970, but many are still in operational use throughout the world today.
