Comments: Very rare, original, sales brochures from the very important early aircraft manufacturers, Henry Farman & Maurice Farman.
Henry (usually spelt Henri) Farman and his younger brother
Maurice were born in 1874 and 1877 to English parents living in Paris, France.
Before becoming involved in aviation, Henry started bicycle and
motorcycle racing, eventually moving on to motor cars. He
took part in many high profile motor races including the 1903 Gordon Bennett
race (finishing 3rd). Henry was introduced to ballooning by his
brother Maurice and in 1907 ordered his first aeroplane from the Voisin
brothers. In January 1908 he became the first person to fly a 1 km circuit in
Europe (actually covering approx. 1.5km), making him France's leading aviator.
In October of the same year he made the first cross country flight in Europe
(between Bouy and Reims - 27.4 km). After falling out with Voisin, he built his
own Boxkite aeroplane and went on to set many more records.
Maurice first became involved in aircraft design when he helped develop the
Keller-Neubauer aeroplane. Maurice started his own aircraft business
manufacturing models such as the "Longhorn" and "Shorthorn"
biplanes.
Henry & Maurice's companies later joined forces in building military aircraft. After W.W.I. they attempted to
manufacture luxury cars.
Henry Farman died in 1958, Maurice in 1964.
