W.W.I. Period Royal Flying Corps Sweetheart Brooch

Original W.W.I. period gilt brass sweetheart brooch, which was made from a Royal Flying Corps collar badge. Brooches such as these were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.
This sweetheart brooch was made using a RFC collar 'dog' (collar badge), it was gilded, it's lugs removed and replaced with a brooch pin and hook. Width : 28mm. Nice condition.
The Royal Flying Corps was formed on 13th May 1912 and served through the majority of the First World War. On 1st April 1918, the RFC and the RNAS (Royal Navy Air Service) were separated from the army and the navy and merged to form a new service, the Royal Air Force.
