Genuine autograph by the pioneer
British aviator, Capt. C.A.H. Longcroft R.F.C. Dated November 1913.
Signed in black ink on a blank
postcard which also has an printed picture of him attached (this appears to be cut from
an aviation magazine at the time of the signature).
This item is part of a collection of pioneer aviator signatures which were
accumulated prior to W.W.I. by a Miss N. Nadin of Cheltenham, England. Dimensions (including mount) : 178mm x 128mm. Good condition
Longcroft
qualified for his
aviator’s certificate on March 5th 1912 (Cert. No. 192) at the Bristol School,
Brooklands Aerodrome flying a Bristol biplane.
He was one of the
original 15 officers of the Military Wing of the Royal Flying Corps at it
foundation in October 1912.
On the 19th
August 1913 Longcroft broke the British record for flying in a straight line
with a passenger. Piloting a BE2 biplane, he covered 287 miles non-stop with
Col. F.H. Sykes, Commandant of the Military Wing of the R.F.C.
On the 2nd September
1913, Longcroft, along with other members of No.2 Squadron flew from Scotland to
Ireland, being the first time a unit of the R.F.C. had flown overseas.
He broke his previous
record on the 22nd November 1913 covering 600miles non-stop from
Montrose, Scotland to Portsmouth, England and then on to Farnborough, again with
Col. Sykes as passenger. For this flight he was awarded the Britannia Trophy by
the Royal Aero Club for the “most meritous flight of 1913”.
