The construction of the Hindenburg (LZ 129) began in a purpose built shed in Friedrichshafen in 1931 and she was finally launched on the 26th March 1936. At 803.8 feet long, she was the largest aircraft ever flown. Soon after her launch the Hindenburg started her career as a propaganda tool, visiting all the major German cities promoting Hitler's occupation of the Rhineland. On the 31st March 1936, she embarked on her first long distance flight, from Germany to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On the 6th May 1936, she began her transatlantic passenger service to Lakenhurst, USA. During that season, she made no less than ten round-trips between Germany and U.S.A., and seven flights to Rio. The Hindenburg met it's end on the 6th May 1937 when she spectacularly burst into flames during her mooring procedure at Lakenhurst Air Station. She was completely destroyed in just over thirty seconds, but miraculously, 62 of the Hindenburg’s 97 passengers and crew survived the disaster.
