Special souvenir issue published by "Flight" magazine to commemorate the 1929 Schneider Trophy Air Race. Dated 6th September 1929.
This issue contains 122 pages (including advertisements) and is entirely dedicated to the Schneider Trophy contest. It covers details of the 1929 contest, including the training for the event and has separate sections describing the events of the eleven previous contests held between 1913 and 1927. Dimensions : 304mm x 212mm. Nice condition.
The Schneider Trophy series were without doubt the most famous and prestigious seaplane races ever held. They were started in 1913 by the French Industrialist, Jacques Schneider and were to continue until won three times in five years by the same flying club/country. They ended in 1931 when they were won outright for Royal Aero Club of Great Britain by Flight Lieutenant John Boothman flying the famous Supermarine S6B. The Supermarine seaplanes (S4, S5, S6 & S6B) were specially designed by R. J. Mitchell to take part in the Schneider races and were the basis for the famous W.W.II. British fighter, the Supermarine Spitfire.
The 1929 Schneider Trophy race was held at Calshot near Southampton on the 6th & 7th of September and flew a course over the Solent, the stretch of sea between England and the Isle of Wight. The race was won for Great Britain by Flying Officer Henry Waghorn in a Supermarine S6 in 39 minutes, 42 seconds at an average speed of 328mph.
