Genuine period print depicting a Gloster Meteor setting the world's first jet air speed record. Signed by the pilot and also by Gloster's chief test pilot. Dating from around 1945.
This very attractive colour print reproduced from "R.S. Franklin's" original painting depicts the Gloster Meteor flying along the Kent coastline at Herne Bay, passing Reculver Castle. It is signed by the pilot H. J. Wilson and by Gloster's chief test pilot, Eric Greenwood. The print is glazed and is still in it's original frame. Dimensions (including frame) : 480mm x 405mm, (image area) : 378mm x 300mm. Nice condition.
On the 7th November 1945 the world's first jet air speed record was set by a Royal Air Force Gloster Meteor piloted by Group Captain Hugh Wilson CBE, AFC at Herne Bay (Kent, England) attaining a speed of 606.38mph.
Eric Greenwood was Gloster's chief test pilot and became the first person to pilot an aircraft with turboprop engines. This was achieved on the 20th September 1945 at Church Broughton, England when a Gloster Meteor jet fighter was modified to accommodate two Rolls Royce Trent turboprops.
