Tin-plate Model of a W.W.I. R.F.C. "S.E.5." Fighter
SOLD

Nicely made tin-plate model of a W.W.I., Royal Flying Corps "S.E.5." fighter/scout aircraft. Uncertain as to exactly when made, but would estimate it's age as about 20 years old.
This model is made entirely of painted tin-plate and is a fairly accurate representation of an "S.E.5." (Scouting Experimental) aircraft which was designed and built by the Royal Aircraft Factory (later Royal Aircraft Establishment). Wingspan of model : 320mm. A brass ring is fitted to the top wing enabling the model to be suspended from the ceiling. Bears no maker's marks except the hand painted initials, "V.A.L." on it's underside. Nice overall condition.
The S.E.5. entered service in April 1917 and was used by the Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Flying Corps. In June 1917, an updated version, the S.E.5.a was produced. They were fitted with either Hispano-Suiza or Wolseley Viper engines. A total of 5,205 S.E.5./5.a's were built and were considered one of the most effective allied fighters produced.
