Comments:  A very interesting brochure produced by the oil companies "Shell-Mex & B.P. Ltd.". Describes and illustrates the workings of biplane based on a DeHavilland D.H. 60 Gypsy Moth by an ingenious array of hinged flaps disclosing the detailed break-down and working parts of the cockpit, engine, fuselage and aeroplane in flight. The front and back cover artwork are designed by the celebrated photographer and designer, Maurice Beck. This is one of a series of four different brochures produced by Shell-Mex & B.P. Ltd. The others are: 'The Modern Motor Car'; 'The Modern Aeroplane' and 'The Modern Motorcycle'.

Maurice Beck was a well known photographer and designer who together with Helen Macgregor owned a London photographic studio. During the 1920s he was head photographer for British Vogue.

Shell-Mex and BP Ltd was a British joint marketing venture between Shell and British Petroleum. It was formed in 1932, when, in response to the difficult economic conditions, both companies decided to merge their United Kingdom marketing operations. The parent organisations de-merged in 1976.
